When Casey DeSantis, the first lady of Florida and a cancer survivor, announced the cancer research funding last month, she mentioned Mel Gibson. “Mel Gibson was on Joe Rogan’s podcast, and he was talking about people that he was friends with and they overcame Stage 4 cancer. We should look at it; we should look at the benefits of it. We shouldn’t just speculate and guess,” she said during the press conference.

What did Mel Gibson say?

In a podcast released earlier this year, Mel Gibson spoke about how his friends became cancer-free after taking the controversial drug ivermectin. “I will tell you a good story. I have three friends. All three of them had stage 4 cancer. All three of them don’t have cancer right now, at all. And they had some serious stuff going on,” Gibson said. When JR asked what medications they took, the actor said, “They took some, what you’ve heard they have taken,” and nodded in approval when the host mentioned, ‘Ivermectin, Bendizol.’ Mel Gibson’s statement was widely debated, with many health experts, including the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), calling it ‘dangerous, cruel, irresponsible.’ “Mel Gibson promoted drugs that are not scientifically proven cancer treatments. Misinformation on cancer treatment is dangerous, cruel, irresponsible, and gives false hope to people with cancer and their loved ones,” CCS said in a statement.

What is ivermectin?

Ivermectin is a drug, originally approved to treat parasitic infections, worms, and head lice. This drug, however, isn’t new to controversy. It became a household name during the COVID-19 pandemic when it was wrongly promoted as a cure for the virus.Multiple studies support the evidence that ivermectin is ineffective at treating COVID-19. However, despite several clinical trials proving it to be ineffective against COVID-19, the prescriptions for ivermectin increased 2 to 10-fold above pre-pandemic rates. Though the FDA has not approved ivermectin for treatment or prevention of COVID-19, it was widely used, championed by some health activists and conservative political figures.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in India and it’s fully treatable

Can ivermectin cure cancer?

While a few laboratory studies have shown that ivermectin may have anticancer effects in cells and animals, health experts caution against using it. According to Dr. Bradley Leibovich, Urologic Oncologist, there’s no evidence that this anti-parasitic drug is actually useful for curing cancer. “We’ve been getting a lot of questions about ivermectin nowadays. Ivermectin, like a lot of things, can kill cancer in a petri dish. It’s really easy to kill cancers in cell culture. So in a petri dish, if you add enough water, cancer will die. If you add enough salt, cancer will die. Killing a cancer in a human being is much more difficult. There’s no evidence that this anti-parasitic drug is actually useful for curing cancer. Please seek out traditional therapies,” the doctor said, in a video shared on Facebook.

Pic courtesy: X/ @rightscopee Florida is setting aside $60 million for cancer research, and part of it would…

[10
69757,134,69754,69758,69755,69756,111,139,69
post-93704","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health","tag-florida-cancer-research-funding","tag-health","tag-ivermectin-cancer-research","tag-ivermectin-controversy","tag-joe-rogan-podcast","tag-mel-gibson-cancer-cure","tag-new-zealand","tag-newzealand","tag-nz
["GET
