{"id":94294,"date":"2025-10-22T13:10:13","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T13:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/94294\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T13:10:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T13:10:13","slug":"three-states-hit-record-temps-as-aus-swelters-in-heatwave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/94294\/","title":{"rendered":"Three states hit record temps as Aus swelters in heatwave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Millions of Australian city-dwellers will get a taste of a spring heatwave that has broken temperature records in three states.<\/p>\n<p>Sydney is forecast to swelter through an expected top of 38C on Wednesday, with Newcastle (39C) and Wollongong (36C) also in the firing line.<\/p>\n<p>Senior meteorologist Angus Hines said the hot conditions stemmed from a &#8220;bubble of heat&#8221; stretching across central Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Queensland, NSW and South Australia posted their hottest October days on record on Tuesday, with the mercury hitting 46.1C in Birdsville, 44.8C in Bourke and 45C at Moomba Airport.<\/p>\n<p>The all-time temperatures were delivering heatwave conditions and elevated fire danger, Mr Hines said.<\/p>\n<p>Total fire bans have been declared for the regions of Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, Illawarra\/Shoalhaven, Upper Central West Plains and North Western.<\/p>\n<p>NSW authorities warned walking tracks and remote campgrounds in national parks across the areas could be closed &#8220;at short notice&#8221; if conditions worsen on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Relief from the heat is expected to arrive across NSW and southern Australia on Thursday but those in the north won&#8217;t be so lucky, with temperatures tipped to remain high on Friday and into the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>It won&#8217;t be quite as hot in Darwin (35C), Canberra (31C), Brisbane (30C) and Melbourne (23C) on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Melburnians and Victorians have instead been told to brace for destructive winds and a risk of thunderstorm asthma conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency Management Commissioner Tim Wiebusch said damaging winds were forecast to hit Victoria&#8217;s west on Wednesday morning and reach the state&#8217;s east in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re asking Victorians to ensure that they are prepared for power outages,&#8221; he told reporters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That means be aware of fallen powerlines that may be on the ground but also ensure that you&#8217;ve charged your mobile devices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Meteorology has warned gusts between 90km\/h to 110km\/h are expected to be &#8220;widespread&#8221; and could rise to 120km\/h in the South-West Coast, Bellarine and Mornington peninsulas and Bass Coast.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trees or branches were &#8220;very likely&#8221; to come down in the wild weather, creating hazards on the roads and properties, Geb Abbott from Victoria State Emergency Service said.<\/p>\n<p>She called for motorists to consider alternate routes before hitting the road or if they needed to travel at all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Millions of Australian city-dwellers will get a taste of a spring heatwave that has broken temperature records in&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":94295,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[42,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":{"0":"post-94294","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-headlines","9":"tag-news","10":"tag-top-news","11":"tag-top-stories","12":"tag-topnews","13":"tag-topstories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/94294","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=94294"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/94294\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/94295"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=94294"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=94294"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=94294"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
