CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A popular and widely-used medicine was recalled because it may not be as effective as advertised.<\/p>\n

The Food and Drug Administration announced <\/a>on October 10 that 141,984 bottles of generic brand Atorvastatin Calcium tablets were recalled because they may not work as well as intended due to “failed dissolution specifications.”<\/p>\n

Atorvastatin Calcium is one of the two “most common, most studied, and most used statins,” according to Dr. Brian Cambi in a statement to Yale Medicine<\/a>. Statins are pills that can help clear the bloodstream of cholesterol to prevent fatty deposits. Yale Medicine reported that 47 million Americans take a statin daily as of January of 2024.<\/p>\n

The specific Atorvastatin Calcium tablets affected by the recall were produced by Alkem Laboratories and distributed by Ascend Laboratories.<\/p>\n

Customers who believe they could be affected should go to the FDA’s recall page<\/a> and see if the pill count, manufacturer, and lot number match their own bottle.<\/p>\n
