{"id":97065,"date":"2025-10-23T19:07:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T19:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/97065\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T19:07:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T19:07:11","slug":"ion-x-to-supply-upgraded-thruster-for-univitys-vleo-5g-constellation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/97065\/","title":{"rendered":"Ion-X to supply upgraded thruster for Univity\u2019s VLEO 5G constellation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TAMPA, Fla. \u2014 France-based propulsion startup Ion-X announced Oct. 23 it will provide an upgraded version of its electrospray thruster to Univity, a three-year-old French venture planning 1500 small 5G broadband satellites in very low Earth orbit (VLEO).<\/p>\n<p>Ion-X CEO Thomas Hiriart said the company will supply propulsion systems for at least one of the two 350-kilogram UniShape prototype satellites Univity aims to launch in 2027, ahead of its full constellation deployment by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>The UniShape mission would mark the first flight of Ion-X\u2019s Halo-Max, designed to deliver around five times the total impulse (a measure of overall thrust capacity) of its Halo-100X thruster.<\/p>\n<p>Halo-100X, which completed its first in-orbit demonstration in January, is capable of reaching a total impulse of several thousand newton-seconds, according to Hiriart.<\/p>\n<p>Univity, formerly known as Constellation Technologies &amp; Operations, recently deployed its first payload in low Earth orbit to test a service that would use cellular frequencies from terrestrial partners to connect user terminals developed in-house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mission achieved its technical validation objectives,\u201d Univity CEO Charles Delfieux said, adding that full results from the test campaign would be released next month.<\/p>\n<p>Univity <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/french-vleo-5g-startup-strikes-telecoms-infrastructure-partnership\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">partnered with France\u2019s largest network<\/a> of carrier-neutral hosting sites earlier this year to help integrate its proposed VLEO 5G services with terrestrial telecom operators.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/ion-x-raises-13-million-euros-to-produce-electrospray-thrusters\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ion-X has previously outlined plans<\/a> to produce 10 thrusters per month by 2026, scaling to 200 annually by 2028.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor now, Ion-X has signed a commercial agreement to contribute to the UniShape mission only,\u201d Hiriart said, \u201cbut the company will speed up and strengthen its industrial roadmap if larger orders need to be made for the next phases of the Univity project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ion-X also plans to supply its Halo-100X propulsion system <a href=\"https:\/\/ion-x.space\/ion-x-partners-with-c3s-to-equip-estonias-first-commercial-earth-observation-satellite\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">for Estonia\u2019s OPS-SAT ORIOLE mission<\/a>, an Earth observation demonstrator slated for launch in October 2026.
