The firm backs startups from seed until series A stages, with a focus on areas such as renewable energy, energy storage and sustainable materials.<\/p>\n<p>AENU\u2019s portfolio already includes promising startups such as Entrix, Greenlyte or<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2024\/05\/berlin-based-cleantech-trawa-raises-e10-million-to-cut-sme-energy-costs-and-emissions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0trawa<\/a>. They typically invest from pre-seed to Series A and provide a process-driven approach to support founders, whether in operations, business development, or fundraising.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Contrarian Ventures secured \u20ac25 million from the European Investment Fund to support European startups advancing climate-neutral policies. In July, the firm secured cornerstone investor Veralto to launch its second water-focused fund.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emerald\u2019s investments in 2025 include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2025\/01\/stormharvester-bags-e9-7-million-to-drive-global-expansion-and-tackle-wastewater-challenges\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">StormHarvester<\/a>, an SaaS startup developing an automated water management software platform,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emerald.vc\/emerald-invests-in-nlm-photonics-to-drive-energy-efficient-data-center-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NLM Photonics<\/a>, a data centre efficiency play, <a href=\"https:\/\/emerald.vc\/emerald-invests-in-cajo-technologies-sustainable-laser-marking-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Cajo Technologies<\/a>, a sustainable laser marking leader,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emerald.vc\/emerald-leads-sgd-8-million-investment-in-sg-enviro-driving-advanced-industrial-wastewater-treatment-in-se-asia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">SG Enviro<\/a>, a company driving industrial wastewater treatment in SE Asia, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emerald.vc\/emerald-invests-in-waterly-enabling-the-digital-transformation-of-north-americas-water-infrastructure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Waterly<\/a>, a software company focused on the digital transformation of water infrastructure in the US.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Extantia-Capital.png\" alt=\"Extantia-Capital\" width=\"928\" height=\"546\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/extantia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Extantia Capital<\/a>: With headquarters in Berlin and a team spread across the UK, Germany, and Israel, Extantia invest in deep decarbonisation technologies, energy transition, and climate-first solutions. To do so, they support the next generation of mission-driven Gigacorn founders. This means that they are looking for startups that are ultimately capable of saving more than 1Gt of CO2 emissions per year and are also commercially viable with scalable business models. Extantia\u2019s main investment vehicle is Article 9 Fund, which meets the EU\u2019s strictest sustainability standards under the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR).<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, they closed this fund at<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2024\/11\/berlin-based-extantia-capital-closes-e204-million-flagship-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> \u20ac204 million<\/a>, raised from major institutional investors, to channel into climate tech companies. One of their notable investment is in the startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2024\/09\/munich-based-reverion-raises-e56-million-for-serial-production-of-renewable-power-plants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Reverion<\/a>, which is developing reversible carbon-negative power plants and recently secured \u20ac56 million in Series A funding.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Future-Energy-Ventures.png\" alt=\"Future-Energy-Ventures\" width=\"928\" height=\"546\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fev.vc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Future Energy Ventures<\/a>: This multi-stage VC firm with hubs in Germany, Israel and Silicon Valley, is dedicated to shaping the future of climate transition. It focuses entirely on sustainable investments across three themes with clear decarbonisation potential: future energy, future cities and future technologies. In 2024, the venture launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2024\/01\/future-energy-ventures-launches-e110-million-fund-to-bet-on-decarbonisation-of-the-energy-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">new fund<\/a> with a volume of \u20ac110 million and a target size of \u20ac250 million, joined by E.ON and the European Investment Fund (EIF), aimed at developing and implementing digital solutions to drive the energy transition. <\/p>\n<p>With average initial tickets of \u20ac1\u201310 million, the fund targets seed to Series A investments in Europe, North America and the Middle East. One of its recent investments includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2025\/07\/berlins-thermondo-raises-e50-million-to-heat-up-germanys-homes-and-bridge-affordability-gap\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">thermondo<\/a>, a German heat pump installer that has raised \u20ac50 million, or the Swiss <a href=\"https:\/\/jua.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Jua <\/a>an AI-based Earth simulation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/HTGF.png\" alt=\"HTGF\" width=\"928\" height=\"546\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.htgf.de\/en\/venture-capital-investor-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">HTGF (High-Tech Gr\u00fcnderfonds)<\/a>: Headquartered in Bonn, this venture manages over \u20ac2 billion, making it Europe\u2019s most active early-stage investor. This combination of early backing and long-term support positions HTGF as a key player in financing Europe\u2019s climate tech startups.\u00a0One of their recent investments was at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2025\/06\/german-proxima-fusion-raises-e130-million-in-largest-private-fusion-investment-round-in-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Proxima Fusion<\/a>, a DeepTech startup aimed at advancing its stellarator-based fusion power plant across Europe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/listicle-66.png\" alt=\"Norrsken\" width=\"928\" height=\"546\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.norrsken.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Norrsken<\/a>: It is a VC deeply focused on investing in ClimateTech aligned with the SDGs. They aim to build a global ecosystem that gives entrepreneurs the knowledge, capital and network they need to create solutions to mitigate climate-hazardous consequences. <\/p>\n<p>This year, Norrsken launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2025\/08\/stockholm-based-norrsken-launches-e57-million-fund-to-support-early-stage-impact-startups\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Norrsken Evolve<\/a>, a \u20ac57 million fund aimed at investing in early-stage startups which can develop an impactful solution to mitigate climate change consequences. Additionally, they foster investments in startups \u201cusing AI for good\u2019 to solve challenges in climate, health, food, education, and society. Among their portfolio, there are startups such as the German-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2025\/07\/german-climatetech-startup-1komma5-extends-e150-million-pre-ipo-round-bring-in-new-investors-and-scale-their-heartbeat-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1KOMMA5\u00b0<\/a>, a ClimateTech startup for CO2-neutral energy, heat and mobility or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2025\/07\/london-based-sunsave-banks-e130-million-to-take-solar-mainstream-with-zero-upfront-subscription-model\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sunsave<\/a>, a British energy startup making rooftop solar more accessible to people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/listicle-67.png\" alt=\"Pale-Blue-Dot\" width=\"928\" height=\"546\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/paleblue.vc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pale Blue Dot<\/a>: Founded as Sweden\u2019s first dedicated climate VC, they back early-stage startups combining software and hardware to tackle some of the most pressing climate challenges. Some examples of their investment portfolio include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eu-startups.com\/2025\/07\/paris-based-solarock-raises-e7-million-to-innovate-solar-energy-with-a-new-franchise-network\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Solarock<\/a>, a solar self-consumption startup in France or Cirplus, Europe\u2019s largest B2B procurement platform for recycled plastics.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Planet-A.png\" alt=\"Planet-A\" width=\"928\" height=\"546\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/planet-a.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Planet A<\/a>: This venture is dedicated to backing startups tackling some of the world\u2019s most pressing environmental challenges. What makes Planet A truly stand out is its science-based approach to impact investing. It is the first European VC to build an in-house science team that conducts life cycle assessments of every potential investment.<\/p>\n<p>These scientists even hold veto power, ensuring that only companies with a demonstrable, measurable impact in areas such as climate mitigation, resource efficiency, waste reduction, and biodiversity protection make it into the portfolio.
