A 41-year-old man has been charged in relation to a series of cellphone tower arsons in W\u0101naka in recent months.<\/p>\n
Police confirmed in a statement today they arrested the man in W\u0101naka, who was charged with arson and firearms offences.<\/p>\n
He was also charged in relation to the Lindis Pass cell tower arson in July and will appear in Queenstown District Court today.<\/p>\n
Acting Detective Sergeant Julie Bowman said the arsons were not only frustrating for police, but posed a serious risk to our community.<\/p>\n
“The team have worked tirelessly investigating, and we are thankful that no one was hurt as a result of the actions of this individual.<\/p>\n
“This is a good result for our community and they should feel confident we will always work to hold those to account to carry out such mindless attacks.”<\/p>\n
Acting Det Sgt Bowman thanked the W\u0101naka community for their assistance in these investigations.<\/p>\n
“Police take these matters seriously, as they have \u2013 and continue to have \u2013 a significant impact on our community.”<\/p>\n
Officers had been investigating after three fires had destroyed towers in the\u00a0W\u0101naka and Albert Town areas.<\/p>\n
