{"id":9969,"date":"2025-09-08T16:39:35","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T16:39:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/9969\/"},"modified":"2025-09-08T16:39:35","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T16:39:35","slug":"nurses-midwives-and-health-care-assistants-strike-for-second-day-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/9969\/","title":{"rendered":"Nurses, midwives and health care assistants strike for second day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4K1PIWQ_Image_2_jpg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Nurse Sarita Sharma on strike in Wellington.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nNurse Sarita Sharma on strike in Wellington.<br \/>\nPhoto: SAMUEL RILLSTONE \/ RNZ\n<\/p>\n<p>More than 36,000 nurses, midwives and health care assistants will walk off the job again on Thursday, demanding better pay and increased staffing.<\/p>\n<p>The strike, the second this week, would see Nurses Organisation (NZNO) members withdraw their labour at every placewhere Te Whatu Ora provided health care or hospital care services between 7am and 11pm.<\/p>\n<p>Life-preserving services would still be provided.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of NZNO members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/571732\/more-than-36-000-nurses-take-two-day-strike-action\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took strike action<\/a> on Tuesday morning. The union said Te Whatu Ora had failed to address concerns about patient safety and staffing after a year of bargaining.<\/p>\n<p>Striking nurses outside Health Minister Simeon Brown&#8217;s electorate office on Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/571776\/health-minister-leaves-message-for-nurses-striking-outside-his-office\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were met by a large sign<\/a> plastered across his windows which said the union&#8217;s strike was disrupting more than 13,000 surgeries and appointments.<\/p>\n<p>The strikes followed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/568270\/over-36-000-nurses-midwives-to-strike-for-24-hours-on-wednesday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearly a year of deadlocked negotiations<\/a> between the union and Health NZ, which culminated in a 24-hour strike at the end of July.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4K1PJPE_Media_jfif\" width=\"1050\" height=\"787\" alt=\"Simeon Brown nurse strike\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nA sign on Health Minister Simeon Brown&#8217;s electorate office said the union&#8217;s strike was disrupting more than 13,000 surgeries and appointments.<br \/>\nPhoto: Felix Walton\/RNZ\n<\/p>\n<p>In May, registered nurses were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/political\/565902\/nurses-union-dismisses-latest-pay-offer-as-massive-backward-step\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">offered a pay increase<\/a> of 1 percent in 2025 and 1 percent in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>In July, Health NZ increased this to 2 percent in 2025 and 1 percent in 2026, which the union dismissed as a &#8220;massive backward step&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>NZNO president Anne Daniels told RNZ earlier in the week that &#8211; in addition to pay equity and better staffing &#8211; nurses were demanding a pay rise in excess of 3 percent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That is a pay rate that is above the cost of living. A less than 1 percent pay offer is a pay cut,&#8221; Daniels said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4K1SJ4E_Anne_Daniels_jpg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"656\" alt=\"New Zealand Nurses Organisation president Anne Daniels speaking at the conference this morning\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nNZNO president Anne Daniels.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ \/ Pretoria Gordon\n<\/p>\n<p>But chief clinical officer Dr Richard Sullivan told Morning Report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/national\/programmes\/morningreport\/audio\/2019002453\/health-nz-on-nurses-midwives-and-healthcare-assistants-strike\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Health NZ was not aware of the union&#8217;s demand<\/a> for a 3 percent pay increase until it was brought up on air on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was great to hear a number because we have been asking the union for some time about what it would take to settle this agreement. That&#8217;s the first time I&#8217;ve heard that number.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In July, the <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.nationbuilder.com\/nzno\/pages\/1671\/attachments\/original\/1751596872\/2025-07-04_NZNO_Offer.pdf?1751596872\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NZNO counter offer<\/a> to Health NZ&#8217;s proposed settlement included an increase of 3 percent for 2025, and 2 percent in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan also said he was unsure whether the nurses demands were based on addressing staffing levels or pay.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;d be interesting to get back around the table &#8211; and have that conversation &#8211; and see if we can find a way through this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said he did not believe the country&#8217;s hospitals were understaffed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4K9KXJQ_Image_4_jfif\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Health New Zealand chief clinical officer Dr Richard Sullivan.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nHealth NZ chief clinical officer Dr Richard Sullivan.<br \/>\nPhoto: RNZ \/ Calvin Samuel\n<\/p>\n<p>The strikes come as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/571975\/health-nz-apologises-to-nurses-union-after-ombudsman-s-scolding\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Health NZ formally apologised to the union<\/a> after the chief ombudsman found it had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/571718\/union-says-health-nz-s-delay-in-releasing-data-was-politically-motivated\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unreasonably withheld information<\/a> on staffing levels.<\/p>\n<p>Daniels said the double strike action was &#8220;unprecedented&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That reflects to me the extreme anger that our members have towards Health NZ and the government over not putting on the table something we can talk about.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our minister of health keeps telling us to come back to the table, but nothing new is put on the table &#8211; so what is the point?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Tuesday, Brown said Health NZ&#8217;s latest offer would give graduate nurses a total pay increase of $8337 dollars by June of 2026.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/571641\/health-nz-to-employ-more-graduate-nurses-part-time-cut-on-job-training-document-reveals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Leaked documents<\/a> showed Health NZ was planning to employ more graduate nurses on part-time hours, cut the amount of on-the-job training they received, and reduce the minimum amount of hours graduates could be employed for.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4K1PITG_Image_3_jpg\" width=\"1050\" height=\"700\" alt=\"Nurse Karen Drummond on strike in Wellington.\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nNurse Karen Drummond on strike in Wellington.<br \/>\nPhoto: SAMUEL RILLSTONE \/ RNZ\n<\/p>\n<p>Figures showed just 45 percent of graduates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/alert-nat\/568036\/nursing-students-graduates-say-they-are-being-failed-by-health-nz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were finding work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we&#8217;re going to have a part-time workforce which means that they won&#8217;t get paid what they deserve and they will have to find secondary jobs to pay off their student loans or other debt,&#8221; NZNO kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Delegate Noreen McCallan told RNZ the two-day strike action was not taken lightly by members.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are doing this because we fear for the safety of our patients. We will lose two days&#8217; pay for striking but we are standing up for safe staffing because it is the right thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We became health workers because we want to care for people. But staff shortages have become overwhelming and exhausting for many of us.
