A Women’s Super League club have been forced to forfeit a league fixture for the second time this year.
Warrington Wolves Women have informed the RFL that they are forfeiting their fixture against Leeds Rhinos due to a number of injuries and lack of player availability.
It is the second time the Wolves have had to forfeit a fixture this year, after the same reasons meant their game against St Helens was cancelled at the end of July.
It has been a torrid season for the Wolves, as they currently sit rock bottom without a win, having conceded 680 points across 11 matches, scoring just 56.
The Rhinos have been awarded a 48-0 victory as compensation, which is significantly lower than the 110-0 scoreline Leeds beat them in the reverse fixture.
The RFL are deciding whether action needs to be taken against the Wolves.
Women’s Super League playoff race in full swing as league leaders beaten
Much like the men’s competition, the women’s league is as tight as ever, with the top four teams all looking to secure a home semi final by finishing in the top two places.
After a dominant season that has seen them already take home the Challenge Cup, Wigan Warriors were beaten for the first time this year, after being blown away by third placed York Valkyrie. A 32-10 defeat in Blaydon, Newcastle, saw Dennis Betts’ side drop to second, after being overtaken by St Helens.
York also closed their gap to the top two with a win, meaning there is just two points between the top three teams.
Leeds sit comfortably in fourth position, five points either side of third and fifth, after a tough start to the season saw them fall behind the top three.
With just three rounds to go, there will be Women’s Super League rugby available to watch live in each of the remaining game weeks, as both Sky Sports and The Sportsman are offering coverage of matches featuring the top four sides.
