Ireland’s Finn Crockett (VolkerWessels Cycling Team) has taken his second UCI-ranked win of the season, saying it was “a great feeling” to win two big races especially after a bad crash at the start of the year kept him out of action for months.
The 26-year-old was best today in the Netherlands at Slag om Norg (1.2), a brutally hard 166.3km race run over seven laps in Norg with two gravel sectors back-to-back on the circuit.
Crockett got away in a small group on the second lap and, though they still had a long way to go, they really pressed home their advantage.
“We were all on the limit, we were out front all day,” Crockett said of coming to the finish for a sprint to decide the victory at the end of a very hard day out over the gravel sectors.
“It was a hard day out front and it just comes down to that tiny percentage at the end and luckily I had it today. So I’m really happy to pull it off for myself and the team.
“I’ve had a really tough year, I had a bad accident at the start of the year, it was two days before the season was supposed to start. And I couldn’t start properly racing until about May-June.”

Crockett won the four-up sprint today from Dutch riders Rick Ottema (Diftar Continental Cyclingteam) and Axel van der Tuuk (Metec-SOLARWATT p/b Mantel), with Dane Magnus Bak Klaris (AIRTOX-Carl Ras) in 4th.
His victory follows his general classification win at Kreiz Breizh Elites (2.2) in France three weeks ago when he snatched the final yellow jersey with a brilliant ride on the last stage.
“This is the first time I’ve done this race and I hadn’t done the sectors previous to this,” he said. “I went in blind to this race and the first lap was chaotic.
“I managed to slip away with a group on lap two and, to be honest, it made the race quite smooth, especially on the twisty turny course. It was good being in a small group, we could keep the speed quite high. It was just survival on the gravel but it was great fun.”
Crockett added while the breakaway went away very early in the race, he immediately felt confident once he saw the composition of the group.
“I knew the riders I was with, I knew how strong they were so I had a good feeling about it going far into the race and it did, it paid off.”
