Ribble Valley MP Maya Ellis says the government will come down hard on anyone found fly tipping waste after a spate of incidents across the borough this summer.

Several incidents have taken place near Marles Wood, close to the village of Ribchester, while other rural areas in the Ribble Valley have also been blighted.

But it is not just the countryside being targeted by fly tippers. Blog Preston recently reported how Bamber Bridge councillor David Bollenberg, alongside volunteers, was trying to tackle the growing scourge of fly tipping in the area.

Maya Ellis said: “I know fly tipping continues to be a huge problem across the whole of constituency and it’s an issue I take incredibly seriously.

“Significant amounts of waste have been found at Marles Wood car park [and] we reported this issue and have got Ribble Valley Council Cleansing Team to clear this area.

“This government is taking a hard line on the issues of fly tipping and plans to increase prison sentences for those who transport or deal with waste illegally, as well as the seizing and crushing of these vehicles. Councils currently have to bear the significant cost of seizing and storing vehicles but under proposed new plans, fly-tippers will cover this cost, saving councils and taxpayers money.

“If you have any evidence or intelligence of fly tipping/burning in this area, you can get in touch directly with the Environment Agency by calling the incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60, or by emailing [email protected]. Alternatively, you can email Ribble Valley Borough Council at [email protected].”

Defra figures show that cases of fly tipping rose by 6 per cent, from 1.08 million in 2022/23 to 1.15 million in 2023/24. The most frequent size category for fly-tipping was ‘small van load’ (31 per cent of total incidents), followed by ‘car boot or less’ (28 per cent).

The National Farmers Union has called for more to be done to punish those dumping waste illegally.
