Taylor Townsend has enjoyed quite the week at the US Open after reaching the fourth round.

Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko’s dispute has been a big topic of conversation at the US Open this year.

However, the doubles world number one has also produced some impressive tennis, with Townsend also knocking out Mirra Andreeva.

Townsend’s unpredictable game continued to impress, before she suffered a heartbreaking defeat to two-time Grand Slam singles champion Barbora Krejcikova.

Townsend had not won one Grand Slam singles match this year until the US Open, where she found herself one point away from a first ever quarterfinal.

Despite having eight match points, Townsend was unable to beat Krejcikova and left the court in tears.

After having some time to reflect on her performance in singles at the US Open, Townsend admitted she was proud of herself and felt like she had gained respect from fellow tennis players.

“I am proud of myself. I don’t think I have ever put on a performance like this,” Townsend said in her post-match press conference.

“Even when I had gone deep in some tournaments or played well, it was always just like she is just on a run and I think that more than anything I gained the respect of everyone in the tennis world and put a lot of my competitors on notice that the things they were kind of like ‘oh, we think she is this type of player but’.

“I think I really eliminated the ‘but’ and gained a lot of respect in the tennis world both from men and women. I am exactly where I need to be and it feels good.”

Townsend’s claim about gaining more respect from people within the tennis world is supported by a comment made from Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Gilbert praised Townsend for really improving one shot in particular after watching her match against Krejcikova.

Gilbert wrote, “Taylor T is playing some very good ball, the backhand has been a massively improved shot.”

What will happen to Taylor Townsend’s singles ranking after the US Open?

Although Townsend has reached the fourth round of a singles Grand Slam for the first time since 2019, she will still remain outside the top 100 in the WTA rankings after the US Open.

After dropping ranking points from deep runs in Canada and Cincinnati last year, Townsend found herself down at world number 139 ahead of the US Open.

Townsend’s run to the fourth round of the US Open means that her live ranking is now world number 111.

The 29-year-old has a career-high ranking of world number 46, which she achieved last year, and Townsend will be looking to move back towards that after the US Open.

Townsend may be out of the singles draw, but she still remains in the doubles draw alongside Katerina Siniakova as the world number one.
