The referee appointments for Round 25 of Super League have been confirmed, including for the two huge derbies between Hull KR and Hull FC, and St Helens and Wigan Warriors.
Round 25 is actually the reverse fixtures of Round Eight, which was Rivals Round, so there’s a host of other derby or local games including Castleford Tigers versus Wakefield Trinity and Huddersfield Giants versus Leeds Rhinos.
Of course, Saints v Wigan and the Hull derby will gain the most attention as they always do, but also because of what they mean this week.
Should St Helens beat Wigan then Hull KR can claim the League Leaders Shield on Sunday against their cross-city foes. Even if Wigan manage to win, a Hull KR win would all but confirm the League Leaders Shield given the Robins’ superior points difference.
Depending on how Wakefield go, a loss for Hull FC would also put them on the brink of missing the play-offs so there’s lots to play for this week in Super League as we look at the referee appointments.
Who is in charge of this week’s Super League games?
Outside of the derby games, the biggest news is that there is a new referee in Super League with Matty Lynn appointed to his first ever game in the competition.
The 22-year-old will become the 54th person to referee a Super League game, progressing to the top level after joining the RFL’s Grade One panel in 2023. He’s regularly refereed in the Championship and has been a touch judge in Super League, but now he will referee Thursday’s game between Salford Red Devils and Catalans Dragons with Aaron Moore as his video referee.
Thursday night’s other game between Huddersfield and Leeds will be officiated by Tom Grant with Chris Kendall on video referee duties, with Kendall then in charge for Saturday’s game between Warrington and Leigh. Liam Rush is the video ref for that one.
The Good Friday derby will have Jack Smith in charge with Liam Moore as the video referee, whilst the Hull derby will be overseen by Moore with Smith in support as they work together on the two big games this week.
Aaron Moore will officiate Castleford versus Wakefield with Tom Grant serving as the video referee.
