Call the Midwife star Georgie Glen has offered an exciting update on the upcoming new season of the long-running BBC series.

Glen, who has played fan-favourite character Miss Higgins since 2018, revealed that the 15th season of the period drama will finish filming in a couple of months. “We’ll be filming the next series of Call the Midwife until November,” she told Radio Times magazine.

The upcoming season is expected to arrive in January, with the story focusing on the women’s liberation movement.

In the same interview, Glen praised the show’s creator Heidi Thomas, saying that her “writing is what’s made the characters so popular”. The actor also talked about her on-screen friendship with co-star Linda Bassett.

“It’s rare to have women of a certain age on television – you’re usually the token oldie. Linda Bassett, who plays Nurse Crane, and I both enjoy the scenes we have together. Our characters are from very different backgrounds, but I think viewers relate to our friendship on screen,” she said.

Before the new season arrives on the BBC, viewers will get to see Call the Midwife’s “exotic” Christmas specials, which will be set in both Poplar and Hong Kong.

Last May, the broadcaster revealed that “the world of Nonnatus House will be expanding” with a film and a prequel series, which are currently in the works.

The film will take place in 1972 as the main characters from the show take their adventure overseas. The prequel series, set to debut sometime in 2026, will be set in Poplar during World War Two.

These recently announced projects will arrive along with a 16th season of the main series, the BBC confirmed following rumours suggesting that the show was going to be axed.

The BBC quickly shut down those claims, reassuring fans that “Call the Midwife will remain at the heart of the BBC for years to come.”

“As previously announced, there are two Christmas specials, a new series, a film and prequel series, before a sixteenth series in due course. Call the Midwife isn’t going anywhere.”

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
