Garmin has shared more information about its LTE and satellite features for the new Fenix 8 Pro smartwatch. This technology comes under the inReach sub-brand, though the smartwatches use a different solution from Garmin’s GPS handhelds.
Older Garmin inReach devices use a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite, which requires larger antennas and batteries. Due to their smaller size, Garmin’s inReach smartwatches, currently just the Fenix 8 Pro, use geostationary satellite systems. It is worth noting that this requires a good line of sight, without obstacles. The Fenix 8 Pro also uses LTE-M technology, with lower power usage to minimize battery drain.
InReach smartwatch features include support for SOS with Garmin Response, allowing users to contact the brand’s 24/7 response center for emergency assistance. You can also send 30-second voice or text messages to friends via LTE or satellite. Garmin encourages recipients to have the Garmin Messenger app, though you can technically send a text directly to a saved contact. Other features include LTE voice calling and weather forecasts via LTE. Plus, you can use LiveTrack location sharing or send a location update via satellite.
In terms of how the technology is prioritized, an inReach smartwatch will try to connect to your phone first. Failing this, LTE will be switched on for most forms of communication. If you are out of LTE range, then the watch will switch to satellite. Users will also be able to manually override the device to send a message via satellite should they wish.
To access these LTE and satellite features, Fenix 8 Pro users will need an inReach subscription. This is managed via Garmin Connect, with prices starting from $7.99/£7.99/€9.99 per month for inReach Enabled (features and prices per tier shown below). Users will be offered a free trial for 30 days. It is also worth noting that LTE coverage and satellite connectivity vary by country; you can find a coverage map on the Garmin website.
The Fenix 8 Pro smartwatch will be available to order globally on September 8th with prices starting from $1,199.99.
