A mother and daughter duo carried out a “nasty, prolonged and completely pointless” attack on a woman in the street – as her seven-year-old son watched on.

Carlean Brown, 41, and Brodie-Leigh Brown, 22, beat the victim after getting into a “screaming match” with her, Liverpool Crown Court heard yesterday (September 3).

The attack was captured on a Ring doorbell, with footage showing Brodie-Leigh Brown and her neighbour Madina Wady shouting at one another.

In the footage, which was shown in court, Brodie-Leigh was then seen to lunge at Ms Wady and drag her to the ground.

The two women then grappled with each other in full view of Ms Wady’s son – before Carlean Brown came out of her house and kicked Ms Wady in the head twice, as she lay on the ground.

The incident occurred at around 2.30pm on October 15 last year, on Tarbock Road, Speke, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Prosecutor Ian Criddle said: “The victim was with her son when outside her home they came across Brodie-Leigh Brown. Brodie-Leigh was abusive in the street and Ms Wady responded in kind, and that can be heard.

“As a result of this, Brodie-Leigh can be seen on the footage approaching Ms Wady, and they start fighting in the street. Ms Wady was then knocked to the floor and Brodie-Leigh was scratching at her eyes and hitting her to the face.

“It’s at this point Carlean Brown became involved. She can be seen running out of the house carrying something, either a pole or a hammer, which she can be seen to put down on the floor before joining in the attack on Ms Wady. She can be seen to kick on two occasions to the head.”

After attacking Ms Wady, the mum and daughter smashed her mobile phone and hurled her bag across the ground. Brodie-Leigh Brown covered her face with her hands as footage of the “undignified” assault was played to the court.

Mr Criddle said the victim had left Tarbock Road “as a direct result of this incident”, and was “concerned for her son who was worried about his safety, given the incident he witnessed of his mum being attacked.”

Carlean Brown, of Newman Street, Kirkdale, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, criminal damage, and possession of an offensive weapon. Brodie-Leigh Brown, of Upton Green, Speke, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and criminal damage.

Mr Criddle said: “Brodie-Leigh Brown has no convictions. The same cannot be said for Carlean Brown, who has been sentenced on seven occasions for 15 separate offences. Offences of dishonesty, drugs, and disorderly behaviour.”

Callum Ross, defending Carlean Brown, said: “She was candid in her acceptance of her role and apologised for her offending. She offered an explanation, but not an excuse, and showed remorse. She was struggling with the regulation of her emotions, having sadly lost her grandmother only as few weeks before.”

He said the mum had suffered a “difficult background”, adding: “Clearly there will be some harmful impact on her youngest daughter if she is sent to prison at such a significant part of her youth, at just 13 years of age.”

Judge Simon Medland said Brodie-Leigh had committed summary-only offences that should have been addressed at a lower level in the magistrates court, and agreed to sentence her to a community order.

He said: “You fall to be sentenced for a really unpleasant act of violence in the street. It was nasty and prolonged and completely pointless. In the first instance you, Brodie-Leigh, having got into a screaming match with your neighbour, pulled her down and started fighting her on the pavement.

“Your mother then came out with a hammer and proceeded to kick that poor woman on the ground twice to the head. For most of this, the victim’s son was present.

“You ought, the pair of you, to be completely ashamed of your behaviour. Any right thinking person, looking at that, would be very sad indeed that on the streets of Liverpool we have to see things like that happening.”

He sentenced Carlean Brown to a total of six months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and 30 rehabilitation days.

Brodie-Leigh Brown was sentenced to an 18 month community order and 15 rehabilitation days. Both women were also ordered to pay £120 to the victim, and given restraining orders banning them from contacting her.
