After announcing in May, Google Photos is now widely rolling out a major redesign of the image editor on Android.
At the very bottom of your screen, there’s a reorganized carousel. A magnifying glass icon lets you search for specific capabilities, while you also get a full list of editing tools with descriptions on that page.

Actions: Crop, Magic Eraser, Move, Best take, Portrait blur, Pop, Sharpen, Denoise
Markup: Pen, Highlighter, Text
Filters: Filters, Sky styles
Lighting: Ultra HDR, Portrait light, Brightness, Tone, Contrast, Black point, White point, Highlights, Shadows, Vignette
Color: Saturation, Warmth, Tint, Skin tone, Blue tone
The next carousel above it shows tools in rounded rectangles instead of circles. Value sliders have a new pill-shaped design with a slick animation upon opening/closing.
Above the image preview, you get Framing, aspect ratio, flip, and rotate controls, as well as cropping. At the top, there are close/exit and Save buttons.

Besides this new design, a big focus is on making AI easier to access in that first Auto tab. Enhance, Dynamic, and AI Enhance use a “combination of different tools to generate multiple results.”
Meanwhile, when you tap, draw a circle around, or brush a part of the photo, Google Photos will surface a list of tools to “edit just that part and leaves the rest of your photo alone.” This includes Magic Eraser, moving, and Reimagine (Magic Editor) for a more integrated experience, though you can still go to the Actions tab.
Google confirmed to us today that this Photos editor redesign is now widely available on Android after gradually rolling out in recent weeks. It’s a server-side update with the latest version (7.44) of Google Photos. If you’re not seeing it yet, Force stop Google Photos from the App info page. (It will be available on iOS in the future.)
This new editor joins recent visual tweaks like the redesigned photo viewer, Create tab in the bottom bar, and Material 3 Expressive backup indicator.
