Our Ladies, the Scotland-set comedy that has been likened to Derry Girls, is on TV tonight.

The ’90s-set film, which is based on Alan Warner’s 1998 novel The Sopranos, tells the story of five best friends at a Catholic school in Fort William, with the group seizing the day as they have a field trip in Edinburgh.

Upon their arrival in the big city, the group bunk off a choir competition and instead engage in a spot of drinking, flirting and partying as they embrace their newfound sense of freedom.

Though it didn’t make a big splash at the box office, the comedy was acclaimed by critics, with the film currently having an approval rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes from 31 reviews.

“It features five of the most compelling, neatly drawn and slightly terrifying female protagonists committed to film,” noted The Times, while The i Paper dubbed it “Derry Girls meets Trainspotting” as they called it “raucous”.

This sentiment was echoed by The Herald, which wrote: “What Derry Girls and Our Ladies share is a big, beating generous heart and a genuine affection, make that love, for young women at the point in their lives when they are at their most brave.”

“What’s ultimately so joyous about Our Ladies is all the small ways they rebel against their circumstances – while the world wants them to focus on the destination of their lives, they’ve chosen to revel in the journey,” opined The Independent.

While the comedy is set to air on Film4, Channel 4’s streaming service has plenty of other films available, with real-life crime drama Reality and musical biopic Rocketman recently being added to the streamer.

Our Ladies airs at 11.15pm on Film4 tonight.
