Those looking for a fresh period drama to enthral them should try this mini-series from the BBC, after others have been gripped by a “doomed” love story and others have enjoyed a wartime drama.

The show garnered praise from viewers, who were impressed by the programme based on a dark true story.

One person posted on IMDb: “Many are saying this is slow and it is, but its done in a masterful way which builds to the end that we all know. For me, what makes this a joy is the remarkable acting [sic].”

Another glowing review read: “Cannot believe anyone gave this less than 9/10! The suspense, mood, performances are the best thing I’ve seen for a very long time- including cinema, TV, or DVD.”

A third 10/10 review noted: “Despite the reality based subject matter, this is not an exploitational [sic] movie. Viewers seeking violence and gore will be disappointed. For the rest of us, it’s a study of evil – its existence, its manifestation, and its consequences for innocent and guilty alike. Superbly filmed with a first-rate cast.”

As a fourth audience member titled their review: “Oh boy this is not for the faint hearted.”

The user continued: “I have wondered for many years why there had been no attempt to retell the grizzly story of the goings on at number 10 Rillington Place. The fabulous 1971 version featuring the marvellous Richard Attenborough will live on as a classic forever. So once again, well done BBC for retelling a story in such a thorough and compelling way.”

Limited series Rillington Place was a chilling re-telling of the real-life murders committed by John Christie (played by Tim Roth) at the address during the 1940s and 1950s.

The BBC series was spilt into three episodes, each of which focused on a different character.

The show also starred The Walking Dead’s Samantha Morton as Ethel Christie, Nico Mirallegro as Timothy Evans, and Killing Eve star Jodie Comer as Beryl Evans.

The 2016 BBC series came after the 1971 Richard Attenborough and John Hurt film 10 Rillington Place.

There was also much praise for Hollywood star Roth as one person wrote: “A grimy, unsettling, and impeccably acted British miniseries about a famed series killer [sic].”

A second viewer explained in their top-tier review: “Wow Tim Roth and Samantha Morton are just brilliant in this series based on real events, believe me you’ll want to watch the whole series in one go, its so well worth it. Tim Roth is creepy but so damn good at it.”

A third echoed similar sentiments: “Well……this was an outstanding retelling of the murders committed by the extremely creepy soft spoken Mr Christie who was brilliantly played by Tim Roth. It was a very dark superbly written three part drama.”
