Netflix is currently streaming a British drama that left audiences both weeping and roaring with laughter – and fans say you should watch it immediately.
The film was directed by acclaimed filmmaker Mike Leigh, who has secured seven Academy Award nods during his illustrious career.
If Leigh’s name rings a bell, you might recognise him as the mastermind behind 1996 tragicomedy Secrets and Lies, which earned five Oscar nominations in 1997.
Jump to 2024, and Leigh delivered Hard Truths, which has now landed on the streaming platform.
Set in London, the plot zeroes in on the life of depressed woman Pansy and her bond with sister Chantelle, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The production features Oscar-nominated Marianne Jean-Baptiste as the tormented protagonist, with Michele Austin as her sibling.
Both performers garnered acclaim for their portrayals, though Jean-Baptiste emerged as the clear highlight. Rotten Tomatoes critics awarded the movie an impressive 95% score and celebrated the 58 year old performer.
Their verdict states: “Marianne Jean-Baptiste puts on a prickly masterclass in Hard Truths, another superb character study from writer-director Mike Leigh.”
General cinema-goers similarly showered Jean-Baptiste with praise, with one penning: “The acting is excellent, with Marianne Jean-Baptiste giving the performance of her lifetime as Pansy.
“[Mike] Leigh is 82 now, but it seems he is not slowing down at all. Long may he continue to make films like this.”

One IMDb user praised the film, saying: “Gritty British drama. No sugar coating, no CGI just a normal film about the ups and downs of two sisters and their families.
“Marianne Jean-Baptiste was outstanding as Pansy and there were other great roles as well, but Marianne was just superb.”
Another reviewer highlighted the emotional rollercoaster the drama provides, stating: “It’s definitely a film that will make you laugh out loud and cry, and you may not like Pansy but you will still enjoy every minute you’re with her. See Hard Truths as soon as possible.”
