FC Twente’s technical director Jan Streuer admits the club could move on from Rangers defender Robin Propper.
The Dutchman is wanted by his former club just 12 months after they sold the centre back to the Scottish Premiership side.
A deal has reportedly been held up while Propper sorts out an arrangement over the remaining three years on his contract at Ibrox – but the Eredivise side appear to be growing impatient with their former captain.
While Streuer conceded he would like to re-sign the 31-year-old this summer, he concedes that they could move on to other targets.
He told De Volkskrant: “All sorts of factors beyond your control (dictate transfers). Just before last season, our captain Robin Propper left at the last minute.
“We really missed him. Rangers bought him. A top Scottish club. You can’t compete with them.
“Now there’s a new manager at Rangers, he might play less. Then he might be able to return.
“But he’ll want to wait and see first if he actually plays less. Do we have to decide: do we wait for that or do we see what happens next?”
And four-time Rangers title winner Neil Murray reckons that Russell Martin‘s big issue this summer is the size of his squad.
The competitive action will get underway for the new boss on Tuesday in the crucial Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos.
But forgotten men like Propper, Ben Davies, Clinton Nsiala and Jose Cifuentes all remain on the books – with Martin already adding seven new signings.
Murray said: “It’s about finding the best formula because there will be new players there who have given the Rangers group a boost.

“One thing people are talking about at the moment is the Rangers squad is absolutely massive.
“There are plenty players to choose from which, sometimes, generates its own problems.
“Russell Martin will hopefully have a good idea of his best XI. Team selection will be key. There are big calls to be made.”
