Coronation Street’s Dame Maureen Lipman has tied the knot with her partner, David Turner. The happy news was revealed by her close friend, Gyles Brandreth, who has appeared on Celebrity Gogglebox alongside Dame Maureen.
Dame Maureen is renowned for her role as Evelyn Plummer on the Cobbles. The 79-year-old arrived in Weatherfield in 2018 and has been at the centre of many major storylines ever since. Recent plots have centred on the return of her daughter, Cassandra, who is played by Claire Sweeney.
Away from the screen, she has been engaged to David since last year and the two got married over the weekend. Gyles shared the news on his podcast Rosebud last week as he said: “I will be going to [Dame Maureen’s] wedding.
“She’s getting married. She’s getting married in the morning! I think it’s actually the afternoon. I’ll be there. Isn’t it fantastic? To get married in your 80th year is fantastic.’
He revealed the wedding was interrupted by the 3pm emergency phone alert in his role as a commentator on This Morning.
He said: “What happened was this, at 2:30 the rabbi said, ‘I have written to the Prime Minister, telling him that there’s going to be this exciting wedding, do you have a message?
“The Prime Minister replied, ‘I’m not able to be here but I’ve arranged for sirens to be sound all over the country’.”
David is Dame Maureen’s second husband as she was married to writer Jack Rosenthal from 1974 until he died in 2004.
Jack was renowned for his work on Corrie and she said Evelyn is the sort of character her late husband would have created.
She said: “She’s a proper battleaxe, and she’s not really redeemed.”
Evelyn found love again with Guido Castro who she started dating in 2008. However, Dame Maureen was heartbroken when Guido died after contracting coronavirus in a care home while suffering from Parkinson’s in 2021.
The soap star said she feels grateful “to have had two such wonderful men” and revealed she took to art therapy to help cope with the grief.
She told Mirror Online: “My experience is just one of thousands of feeling bewildered and out on a limb. The residual pain, the grief, I let it drip out inclemently. Sometimes I can’t sleep.”
