A huge call is set to be made by Hull KR boss Willie Peters.Hull KR head coach Willie Peters faces a big selection call.
Hull KR head coach Willie Peters is set to face a major selection decision, with long-term absentee Oliver Gildart closing in on his return to action.
The centre’s comeback has been pencilled in for the penultimate round clash against Wakefield Trinity for some time, marking his first appearance since suffering a meniscus injury during the Robins’ 54-0 win over Salford Red Devils at Magic Weekend in May. Gildart required surgery and has been on the recovery trail ever since.
Before his injury, the 29-year-old was in fine form, scoring eight tries in 13 appearances across all competitions, along with five Super League assists. His return comes at a critical time and is a significant boost ahead of the play-offs – but also presents a tough call for Peters.
Jack Broadbent has filled the centre role in Gildart’s absence, making 13 appearances in the position since his team-mate’s injury blow. The 24-year-old’s versatility has been a major asset this season, also featuring at full-back, on the wing, and from the bench. He has played 28 games in total, scoring 17 tries.
With top spot all but confirmed, the next two rounds could offer a chance to rest key players. Kiwi veteran Peta Hiku has missed just one match all season, while in-form winger Tom Davies has featured in all but two games.
Meanwhile, Joe Burgess missed the recent derby win due to minor tightness during the captain’s run and was not risked. In his place, Noah Booth seized his latest opportunity, scoring a try in the 18-4 victory.
However, when the play-offs begin, Peters will face one of his most difficult – but welcome – selection dilemmas of the season, as Hull KR chase a historic treble. They could secure the League Leaders’ Shield on Saturday night with a win or draw against Wakefield Trinity. It could also be confirmed if Wigan Warriors fail to beat Castleford Tigers 24 hours prior at the Brick Community Stadium.
