Kasper Dolberg insists he is returning to Ajax a much better player after snubbing Celtic in order to rejoin the Eredivisie giants.

The 27-year-old is back in the Dutch capital for the first time in six years, where he scored 45 goals in 119 matches before being sold to Nice in Ligue 1 for £19million.

After loan stints with Sevilla and Hoffenheim, Dolberg then moved on to Belgian outfit Anderlecht in 2023 and his 44 goals in 96 appearances caught the eye of the Hoops’ during the summer transfer window.

Brendan Rodgers‘ side were said to have seen two approaches rebuffed by Anderlecht, with the player reportedly having no intention of making the switch to Parkhead.

Ajax legend Danny Blind – a member of the de Godenzonen team that lifted the Champions League in 1995 – has questioned his old club’s decision to bring the Denmark international back and reckons that the forward will struggle to get game time ahead of veteran Wout Weghorst.

But Dolberg is adamant that he can offer something different to manager Johnny Heitinga and says he didn’t hesitate when he was presented with the opportunity to come back to the Johan Cruyff Arena on deadline day.

Speaking to the club’s wesbite, he said: “I wanted to come back to Ajax for the club, for everything really. I have great memories here. When the opportunity arose to return, I didn’t hesitate. I also lived here for four years and I’ve missed Ajax all those years.

“I’m here to win. To become league champions with Ajax. That’s the most important thing. Personally, I just want to enjoy myself again, have fun. And of course, I want to score plenty of goals.

“You grow as a person (as you get older), and I have a bit more self-confidence.

Dolberg, could make his second Ajax debut against PEC Zwolle and added: “Yes, I’m ready.

“I’ve already played plenty of matches. I feel good and I’m fit. I also have good memories of matches against PEC Zwolle.

“I’m certain it’s going to be fantastic to play in the Johan Cruyff Arena again.”
