Round 19 of Super League has concluded but the disciplinary fallout from the six games will be determined today.
The Match Review Panel will meet to go over all incidents across the six matches, including those that went unpunished in real time.
Last week’s disciplinary verdict saw Hull FC and Hull KR hookers Amir Bourouh and Jez Litten both handed one-match bans, although both men were already set to miss the Round 19 games anyway on account of failed HIAs.
Only one player was sent to the sin bin in Round 19 but as we’ve seen in previous weeks, that doesn’t always mean that players escape punishments.
We’ve examined some of the incidents that could have Super League teams sweating ahead of today’s disciplinary review.
Who will be sweating the Super League disciplinary verdict?
Alex Mellor was the only man to be sent to the sin bin and he really didn’t have a case to contest it whatsoever. The Castleford Tigers captain made a try-saving tackle, however, he wrapped Josh Thewlis high around the head and neck before then managing to hold the winger up over the line.
Thewlis would have certainly scored without Mellor’s intervention but no penalty try was awarded, much to the frustration of Sam Burgess.
Whether it should or should not have been a penalty try, Mellor can expect a charge for making contact with the head and it could well warrant a ban depending on the grade.
Earlier in that game, Ben Currie hit Daejarn Asi late as the Castleford man kicked and that’s something that referees and the disciplinary panel have been clamping down on this year in Super League.
Hull FC’s Jack Ashworth also committed a tackle off the ball which could see him cited, whilst Wigan’s Tyler Dupree went high in that game as well.
The Match Review Panel will meet later today with all of the above and a number of other incidents likely to be looked at.
