The ex-England captain and Manchester United footballer has lived with his wife and former Spice Girl, Victoria, in west Oxfordshire for several years.

Sharing a mansion in the Cotswolds, the couple have embraced the countryside lifestyle.

Away from his quiet private life in the British countryside, the 50-year-old has pursued several ventures since his sporting retirement.

One of which was Shoreditch-based Guild Esports, which was started in 2018 and entered the London Stock Exchange in 2020.

This attracted the attention of Sir David who became one of the biggest shareholders.

With Sky Broadband and Subway partnerships, the future looked bright, but Guild Esports suffered consecutive years of losses.

The company was subsequently sold in August 2024, which saw the California investment firm DCB Sports acquire it in a £2.1m deal.

After being put up for sale on an insolvency marketplace last month, Guild Esports then entered voluntary liquidation.

Creditors are set to be out of pocket by millions now, with a recent Companies House document stating a combined £2.3m will be lost out on, with unsecured non-preferential creditors losing a total of £1.7m.

Around £540,000 is owed to HMRC, while as many as 18 employees are also owed £125,525 collectively, according to City AM.

In a statement released in August, the company said: “After careful consideration, we must share the difficult news that Guild Esports & Gaming will be closing.

“Despite our best efforts, financial challenges and the current economic climate have made it impossible for us to continue operating.

“From day one, our mission extended far beyond competition.

“We’ve been privileged to champion representation and create opportunities within our industry using esports and gaming as powerful tools for inspiration, inclusion, and empowerment.

“We recognise that this closure disappoints the community that believed in us, and for that we are sorry.

“However, we hope this does not overshadow the work our dedicated staff delivered throughout our journey.

“This outcome is also not a reflection of the support of all our partners who supported our work in the esports space alongside us over the past five years.

“To everyone who became part of the Guild family, from our fans and players to staff and partners – thank you.

“Your passion and belief helped us build something truly special.”
