The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has backed calls by energy companies for significant tariff adjustments.

The IMF’s Director of Communications, Julie Kozack, stated that the proposed tariff increases would help address Ghana’s long-standing challenges in the energy and power sectors.

Several state-owned utility companies have submitted proposals to the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), each seeking major tariff adjustments to sustain operations, improve infrastructure, and ensure long-term service delivery.

According to the companies, the proposed adjustments are necessary due to operational challenges and the environmental damage caused by illegal mining (galamsey). Some proposals represent increases of more than 200%.

Kozack said the IMF also fully supports “broader energy sector reforms, including private sector participation in the operations of the Electricity Company.”

She added that these reforms form part of a broader plan to enhance the performance of state enterprises in Ghana and mitigate fiscal risks.

Kozack also lauded Ghana’s efforts in restoring confidence in the economy through fiscal discipline.

“Growth, for instance, continues to outperform expectations,” the IMF Communications Director noted.
