Boxing icon Ricky Hatton was tragically found dead at his home in Greater Manchester this morning (September 14). Greater Manchester Police have confirmed that a body was discovered and stated the death is not being treated as suspicious.
Devastated fans are now flocking to his Instagram account, left heartbroken by his final post, where the 46 year old was seen training for his planned comeback fight, scheduled for December 2 in Dubai. Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here.
In the video, Hatton, originally from Stockport, is seen taking a brisk walk on a treadmill whilst listening to Ed Sheeran’s song ‘Sapphire’. He can be heard saying: “Another 5k… good sweat on,” whilst breathing heavily, reports the Manchester Evening News.
The boxer then turned the camera towards himself, appearing soaked in sweat during his workout before raising his fist in a defiant gesture. Captioning the post, he wrote: “Evening run in the bag. Don’t your worry about that our kid. #getupthereboy #hitman #bluemoon.”
Following the news of his death, fans have flooded the post with heartfelt tributes, with one person commenting: “RIP Ricky so sad, gone far too soon.”
Another added: “Rest easy champ,” while another said: “You put Manchester on the map mate. We will all miss you.”
One more fan wrote: “God bless you Ricky, Manchester finest,” while another supporter declared: “Rest in Peace Ricky.”
Hatton had been due to take on Eisa Al Dah in a professional comeback fight this December, which was set to go eight rounds. The fighter would have turned 47 in October.
Throughout his boxing career, he secured multiple world titles as well as national honours, receiving Fighter of the Year accolades in 2015. A GMP spokesperson confirmed: “We can confirm that we have found a body at an address on Bowlacre Road in Gee Cross at 6.45am today, Sunday, September 14. The death is not being treated as suspicious.”
