A boy aged 15 was stabbed to death during a ‘disturbance’ involving others on a street in Manchester today, police have revealed.

A murder investigation has been launched after the tragedy in Moss Side. The teenager – who suffered multiple stab wounds – hasn’t been named and no arrests have been made, Greater Manchester Police said.

A senior GMP officer called the murder ‘an appalling act’ as the force issued a major appeal for witnesses.

Police patrols in the area have been stepped up and enhanced stop and search powers have been authorised to last for 24 hours.

The orders, issued under Section 60 of the 1994 Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, give officers greater powers to stop and search individuals. They are commonly usually used after incidents involving serious violence or the threat of violence.

Police and paramedics were called to Monton Street, Moss Side, just after 4.30pm on Monday.

GMP said it followed reports of a disturbance involving a number of people.

The boy was said by the force to have been found with stab wounds.

He was treated at the scene and taken to hospital but was sadly pronounced dead a short time later, said GMP in a statement.

Forensic investigators were pictured at the scene on Monday night and a cordon was in place. A blue forensic tent was also pictured.

Moss Lane East was closed in both directions between Lloyd Street North and Broadfield Road. Monton Street and a section of Lloyd Street North were also closed, traffic reports confirmed.

Chief Superintendent David Meeney, from GMP’s City of Manchester division, said the boy’s family was being offered specialist support. He said: “There is a thorough investigation plan in place as we look to find the perpetrator of this appalling act that has seen a young man lose his life.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends after this tragic and upsetting incident, and our specially trained officers will be supporting them at this difficult time. We have officers in the area as we work to establish the circumstances that led up to the incident.”

He also spoke of an increased police presence in Moss Side. “This incident will understandably have caused shock and concern within the community and the surrounding area, particularly those who witnessed it,” Chief Supt Meeney said.
