Former Wales coach Mike Forshaw has left his role as Leicester Tigers defence coach for personal reasons.

The former Great Britain rugby league international joined the Gallagher Prem outfit this summer, after his contract with the Welsh Rugby Union had expired. However, Forshaw has left the Welford Road club just a matter of months later.

Speaking about his decision, Forshaw said: “I really enjoyed the time at the club, although it was short, and it’s a shame that I can’t give the commitment that is needed to the role at this time.

“I want to wish everyone all the best for this season and the future.

“They are a great group of players, a great group of coaches, and I wish them all the best.”

Prior to working with Wales, Forshaw – who enjoyed a decorated career with Wigan Warriors, Wakefield Trinity, Leeds Rhinos, Bradford Bulls and Warrington Wolves in rugby league – had spent a decade with Sale Sharks as defence coach. He was hired by Warren Gatland upon his return to the Welsh job, with his first campaign being the 2023 Six Nations.

Under Forshaw, Wales reached the World Cup quarter-final in France that year – before failing to win a Test match the following year.

After Gatland left his post during this year’s Six Nations, Forshaw saw out the campaign under interim head coach Matt Sherratt.

However, he did not tour Japan – with Gethin Jenkins looking after the defence as Forshaw’s deal with the WRU expired.

He was subsequently picked up by Tigers, becoming a part of new head coach Geoff Parling’s ticket.

“It’s sad to lose someone of Mike’s experience as he’s been a valuable member of the coaching team,” said Parling.

“On behalf of everybody at Leicester Tigers, I want to thank Mike for his work throughout the pre-season and wish him and his family well.”

Leicester have confirmed that Anthony Allen will take on responsibility for defence, with Alex Davies adding skills to his current role as the club’s kicking coach.

Former Leicester centre Allen had returned to the club as coach this summer, having had a spell coaching at Coventry.
