Things just keep getting worse for Russell Martin at Rangers.

Celtic went nine points clear of the Ibrox side already after Kelechi Iheanacho’s late winner against Kilmarnock on Sunday, compounding Martin’s misery.

Brendan Rodgers’ side are level on points with Hearts at the top of the table, after Derek McInnes’ side left Ibrox reeling after a 2-0 win.

Many supporters have lost patience with the former Southampton boss, and their frustrations couldn’t have been more clear after the final whistle.

So Martin saw fit to take a trip to Loch Lomond on Monday for a bit of team building, and one former Celtic hero has been enjoying a laugh at that.

Chris Sutton fires joke at Nicholas Raskin and Russell Martin

Nicholas Raskin’s situation has been subject to intense discussion, with the midfielder being left out of the matchday squad by his manager despite scoring at international level for Belgium.

He was brought by his manager for a swim on Monday, and speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Chris Sutton saw plenty of subject matter for a joke.

Sutton said: “Rangers fans were singing that song – Martin, get to ‘somewhere’ – and today, as a team building exercise, he went up a mountain. He needs to climb a mountain at Rangers.

“Then they went for a cold dip in Loch Lomond. Sink or swim. I think he and Raskin might have been trying to drown each other, based on all the reports of their falling out.

“I’ve got sympathy for him, and I do mean that. Down south, you’re looking at it and saying you’re five games in, you’ve got new players and they need time to gel. But you just don’t get time in Glasgow.”

Regardless of the sympathy anyone feels towards Martin, he is certainly a lucky man to still be in a job after 5 league matches without a win.

Will Hearts seriously challenge Celtic?

Plenty of negative attention has been on Celtic of late, with a fan-led protest at the Kilmarnock game taking place in response to a disappointing transfer window.

However, the result at Rugby Park reminded Scottish football that the team still has a champion mentality and is capable of getting important results.

But with Hearts neck-and-neck after five games, is there a title race in the offing? Or is this just another situation like Aberdeen last season, which saw the Dons fall away after an impressive start to the season.

Time will tell – it will certainly be interesting to see where the two teams are at when they meet at Tynecastle at the end of October.
