Demi Lovato opened up about her upcoming ninth studio album, It’s Not That Deep
The pop star says that her new music reflects the “lighter” feel of her life since marrying Jordan “Jutes” Lutes in May
“I’m not in this place in my life where I need these huge emotional ballads to release some sort of deep emotional trauma I’m going through,” she tells Paper magazine
For Demi Lovato, these days, it’s not that deep.
The 33-year-old artist is re-entering what she refers to as her “Popvato” era, focusing on uptempo dance tracks on her upcoming album, It’s Not That Deep.
“I think it’s really a reflection of where I’m at personally,” Lovato says of her ninth studio album in the new cover story for PAPER magazine. “I’m not in this place in my life where I need these huge emotional ballads to release some sort of deep emotional trauma I’m going through.”
The Disney alum, who tied the knot with singer-songwriter Jordan “Jutes” Lutes on May 25, says that her current stage of life feels “lighter.”

“I started writing songs like that, and they just weren’t resonating … heavy topics like that. I’m in a place in my life where my energy feels very light,” she explains. “I just got married. It was a learning curve for me to take what I’ve always known about music, which is write what you know now. I had to learn how to write what was new to me, and that’s what this album is a reflection of. The tone of my life is lighter. I wanted a project that reflected that.”
In that vein, Lovato isn’t interested in writing emotional lyrics this time around, saying, “I think this album isn’t really about the killer deep lines,” leading to the album’s title.
“So it’s like, some things are that deep. But for me personally, right now, this music is not that deep for me,” she says. “That’s the energy I want to carry into this project with the music. I just want to be happy. That’s what this is about for me.”
Lovato wed Jutes in an intimate Santa Barbara, Calif., wedding back in May.
At the time, a source exclusively told PEOPLE that the actress and singer has “never been happier.”
“She truly loves Jordan,” the source said. “He’s amazing to her.”

The couple, who met in 2022 while working on Lovato’s last studio album, Holy Fvck, said their vows with the beach in the backdrop.
“The wedding setting was pure magic — an oceanfront estate with sweeping views of the coastline,” the source told PEOPLE of the ceremony, which was first reported by Vogue.
While Lovato was “mostly smiling” throughout the ceremony, the insider noted that “there were a few emotional moments that clearly moved her.”
It’s Not That Deep is available Oct. 24.
