DELAWARE, Ohio (WSYX) — The Little Brown Jug, a prestigious harness racing event, is celebrating its 80th anniversary at the Delaware County Fair. Known as the final and oldest leg of the Triple Crown for pacing horses, the event draws fans from around the globe, including Canada and England.
Chris Welker, the director of the Delaware County Fair, emphasized the event’s significance. “It’s the 80th Little Brown Jug, so that alone has that weight and gravitas that you want for an event like this,” he said.
The Little Brown Jug is a race for 3-year-old pacing horses, marking the culmination of the Triple Crown for pacers. This year, the purse exceeds $600,000, making it a highly anticipated event for competitors and spectators alike.
Gates opened at 7 a.m., with the first race starting at 11 a.m. The day features over 20 races, culminating in the 80th Little Brown Jug. Attendees can also enjoy the Delaware County Fair, which offers rides and fair food through Saturday.

Jay Wolf, discussing the race’s history, noted that the event began in 1946 after the Delaware County Fair moved to its current location. The race was named through a contest, with “Little Brown Jug” emerging as the winner, inspired by a world champion racehorse and a Glenn Miller hit.
This year’s competition includes 14 entries, divided into two groups of seven. The top four finishers from each group will compete in the final race. Among the favorites are horses Blueprint and Prince Hal Hanover, both with impressive pedigrees and past performances.
The Little Brown Jug continues to be a highlight of the Delaware County Fair, offering a blend of history, excitement, and community spirit.
