The 2026 PGA Tour season will not kick off at the iconic Plantation Course at Kapalua as the island of Maui battles severe drought.
From 1986 to 2013, The Sentry was the first signature event of the year, with the top 50 players from the FedExCup standings teeing off to get the campaign under way.

The tradition resumed in 2024 when bosses decided to return a calendar-year schedule.
After relocating to Maui in 1999, The Plantation Course has played host to the iconic event, which has been sponsored by Sentry Insurance since 2018.
Maui County has been experiencing significant drought conditions, affecting over 90 per cent of the area.
Over 140,000 residents have been impacted, per state data, and water conservation mandates are prioritising the local people.
Kapalua Resort has been placed under restrictions and PGA Tour specialists conducted a visit this month, deciding that the course had been ‘significantly compromised.’
While it could recover, the time it takes to put on such a big events means preparations to stage the January tournament elsewhere must begin now.
“Following discussions with the Governor’s office, as well as leadership from Sentry Insurance, Kapalua Resort and Maui County, the PGA Tour has determined the 2026 playing of The Sentry will not be contested at The Plantation Course at Kapalua due to ongoing drought conditions, water conservation requirements, agronomic conditions and logistical challenges,” a statement read. “Additional event information will be shared when appropriate.”
PGA CEO Brian Rolapp and Hawaii Governor Josh Green discussed the development in a virtual meeting on Monday.
“We support the PGA Tour’s decision, given the drought conditions Maui is facing,” said Governor Green. “Protecting our water and supporting our communities come first.
“The Sentry has long showcased Maui’s beauty while giving back to local nonprofits, and we’re grateful to the Tour, Sentry Insurance, Kapalua Resort and Maui County for their partnership.”

Hawaii will host two other PGA events in 2026 — The Sony Open at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu and the PGA Tour Champions’ Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.
“We are excited to host the Sony Open in Hawai‘i, bringing international attention and support to Hawai‘i’s communities,” added Governor Green.
“Additional details about the 2026 playing of The Sentry will be shared when available,”confirmed the Tour website.
