The call comes as part of the Kidical Mass campaign, and ahead of the latest Kidical Mass rides in Brighton and Hove, scheduled for Sunday, September 21.

The family-friendly event, which began in 2023, encourages cycling for all ages while calling for safer, connected cycle networks.

Duncan Blinkhorn, from Brighton Bike Hub, said: “We’re pleased that we’re one step closer to a new cycle lane along the seafront A259 in Hove.

“However much of Hove is dominated by car traffic, which makes cycling less attractive for families.

“Brighton and Hove can be an even better cycling city with continuing investment from the Council.”

Due to growing demand, this year’s Kidical Mass will feature two rides, one in Brighton and one in Hove.

The Brighton route will include feeder rides from Preston Park (south) at 12pm and The Level at 12.15pm.

Riders will head to Stanmer Park for Apple Harvest Day, arriving at 1pm.

The return journey begins at 3.45pm, heading back to The Level and Preston Park.

The Hove ride features four feeder routes: Hove Cemetery (Old Shoreham Road) and Hove Park (south) both at 1.45pm, and Wish Park (east) and Stoneham Park at 2pm.

These will converge at Hove Beach Park on the seafront, where a large circular ride through Hove will begin at 2.30pm.

Iliana Koutsou from Bricycles said: “Too many mums and dads don’t feel comfortable using bicycles on our roads.

“Once children are too big for pushchairs, parents have no choice but to use their cars to get around.

“Our city can be improved with new cycle lanes, so people have the confidence to swap four wheels for two.”

The rides are free, open to all, and marshalled for safety.

They move at a gentle pace to ensure everyone can keep up.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Participants are encouraged to sign up on Eventbrite (Brighton or Hove) to help organisers plan for numbers.

Volunteers are needed for the event. Anyone interested in helping as a marshal can email volunteer@brightonbikehub.org.

More information is available on the Bricycles website at bricycles.org.uk.

Previous rides have attracted hundreds of children and adults.

Kidical Mass in Brighton and Hove is organised by Bricycles, Brighton Bike Hub, Brighton Multicultural Women’s Cycle Club, Clean Air for Brighton & Hove and Old Shoreham Road (OSR) Bike Train.

The event is funded by Cycling UK’s Big Bike Revival.
