Martin Scorsese will next direct What Happens at Night, an adaptation of Peter Cameron‘s 2020 horror mystery novel, Deadline reports.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are set to star in the film, written by Patrick Marber (Closer, Notes on a Scandal).
Apple Original Films is reportedly negotiating to finance and produce with Studiocanal. A January 2026 start date is being eyed.
Scorsese was previously announced to produce the adaptation after Studiocanal acquired the rights back in 2023, but he has now committed to helm the film as well.
Drawing comparisons to The Shining and “Twin Peaks,” What Happens at Night is a dream-like story of a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby.
They check into a cavernous, largely deserted hotel where they encounter an enigmatic cast of characters including a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman and a charismatic faith healer.
Nothing is quite as it seems in this strange, frozen world. As the couple struggle to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about themselves and the life they’ve built together.
The project will mark Scorsese and DiCaprio’s seventh feature collaboration, following Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon.
DiCaprio and Lawrence previously starred together in Don’t Look Up, pictured above.
