Jack P Shepherd has admitted he knew he had lost out to Steve McFadden at the National Television Awards before the decision was announced. The Coronation Street and EastEnders stars were battling it out for the Best Serial Drama Performance gong.

Steve, 66, who plays Phil Mitchell in the BBC soap, was victorious and bagged his first ever NTA award, beating nominees Jack, Jacqueline Jossa, Emmerdale star Eden Taylor-Draper and Corrie’s Sue Devaney to the win. Many had said Jack, who stars as David Platt on Corrie, had looked “p****d off” at the reveal – but he denies this was the case.

Instead, the 37-year-old actor revealed what actually happened on his podcast On The Sofa with Colson, Jack and Ben. Speaking to pals Colson Smith and Ben Price, Jack said: “They said my name first and there was no reaction.

“But then the next person was Steve McFadden and everyone goes mental. So everyone who’s nominated, you have cameras [facing you]. And then they went, ‘and the winner is…’.

“All the cameras turned away from me and went to Phil Mitchell. So it was like, there’s obviously not a camera on me, just to give you a clue that I’ve definitely not won this.”

He went on to reveal his facial expression wasn’t an indication he was annoyed at what was playing out. “My trick of the trade this week is the ‘loser’s face’, when you haven’t won the award,” he said. “What do you do?

“Do you graciously clap and go, ‘yep, well done’? Do you over-egg the pudding as though you’re pleased they’ve won and you’ve lost? Do you do the really p***** off face? Or the other one, to pretend not to be paying attention and laugh at some joke that someone has not made?”

Jack continued: “Usually I do the ‘massively p***** off’ look because it makes me laugh. But this year, because I had no camera on me, I didn’t do anything but they had a little sniper camera.

“So I was in shot and my reaction was ‘I’m just watching the NTAs’. I genuinely wasn’t p***** off.”

Jack recently tied the knot with Hanni Treweek and the pair jetted off for a romantic honeymoon to Italy last month. They got engaged whilst on a holiday in Tanzania last summer and exchanged vows at Manchester Cathedral in front of friends and family.

A number of Jack’s Coronation Street co-stars were in attendance. Colson Smith was also Jack’s best man.

Jack and Hanni then headed to the Amalfi Coast. The actor took to Instagram during the vacation to share their getaway with his followers. They showed off their snaps on the Path of the Gods viewing point, as well as their fancy food and drinks choices.

He also shared a video that showed waves along a coastline. He was stood with his wife on a platform above the water and told his followers: “Little choppy today. A few broken plates.”
