Vashi: Supporting the one-day state-wide protest called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Maharashtra, medical fraternities from Navi Mumbai gathered at Shivaji Chowk Amphitheatre on September 18, to oppose the state government’s decision on dual registration of homeopathic doctors and permitting them to practice allopathy.

Over 50 private practitioners from various associations participated in the protest against the Maharashtra Government notification dated September 5, directing the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) to register BHMS graduates with CCMP certificates. Doctors expressed that this move is in violation of the Government’s earlier notification dated July 11, 2024, which had clearly denied such permissions.

“This decision is shocking and contradictory. Homeopathy doctors are already registered with their council. Allowing dual registration amounts to contempt of court as the matter is still sub judice before the Bombay High Court,” said Ghanashyam Dulera, President, IMA Navi Mumbai.

Dr. Mangai Sinha, President, Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Navi Mumbai chapter, stated, “Permitting homeopaths to practice modern medicine endangers patient safety, undermines scientific practice, and disrespects the years of rigorous training allopathic doctors undergo.”

The agitating doctors demanded immediate withdrawal of the notification, warning that otherwise, they would escalate their protest with a long march to Azad Maidan, followed by an indefinite hunger strike. This agitation has also received support from MSMTA, MAGMO, MARD, MSRDA, AMC, and several other specialty medical associations across Maharashtra.
