Mark Clattenburg shares his thoughts on Reinildo’s red card incident in Sunderland against Aston Villa clash in the Premier League.

The left-back was dismissed in the 34th minute of the Premier League fixture after he lashed out at Matty Cash of Aston Villa.

The on-field referee, Sam Barrott, initially didn’t see the incident – but after VAR consulted him to take a look, he did not hesitate to send off the Mozambique-born defender.

Exclusive: Mark Clattenburg on Reinildo red card in Sunderland vs Aston Villa

Clattenburg agrees with the decision to punish Reinildo with a red card, but also identified that a mistake was made from an Aston Villa perspective, alluding to the fact that Matty Cash should have also been cautioned for catching the Sunderland star.

He says: “Matty Cash has caught Reinildo after he has played the ball, which should have resulted in Cash being cautioned.

“While Reinaldo is on the floor, he makes a small kick out into the body of Cash with his studs, which is an act of violent conduct.

“The VAR was correct to recommend a review as the referee Sam Barrott did not see the incident. Some will say that the kick out was only light, but there is nothing in the laws of the game about how hard the contact was made; it’s the act of kicking out that is punishable.”

Cash was obviously not as in the wrong as Reinildo was, but still should have received a caution in the eyes of Clattenburg.

How many games will Reinildo miss for Sunderland?

Straight red cards for dissent will result in a two-match ban, while dangerous tackles or violent conduct will result in a three-match ban. So in this instance, Reinildo will miss Sunderland’s next three games.

Reinildo will now miss Sunderland’s Premier League fixtures against Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Wolves.

A loss, for a very avoidable red card offence.
