WASHINGTON (7News) — Today is International Red Panda Day, and the National Zoo is celebrating with its baby cub.
The cub is a girl and has light-colored fur that will darken with age, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute.

The cub’s first-time mother Keahi, is attentive and protective of her cub, while the father, Rocket, is not involved whatsoever, according to the Zoo.
The little cub will stay with her mother until spring or summer 2026, zoo officials said.
Red pandas are an endangered species and the only living member of the family aiuridae. Despite the fluffy critter’s name, it is not closely related to the Giant black-and-white Pandas.
