Marcus Rashford was left out of the Barcelona team for their La Liga game with Getafe despite scoring twice in Thursday’s Champions League win over Newcastle.
The 27-year-old Manchester United loanee marked his return to England in midweek with two fine goals. However, on Sunday, he was dropped to the bench by Hansi Flick for their home game with Getafe.
According to The Athletic, Rashford was named on the bench after arriving late to training on the morning of the game. The report states that his lack of punctuality resulted in Flick making the ruthless decision.
It’s understood that the German has a policy of not selecting players to start a match if they are late to training or a meeting. Rashford joins Raphinha, Jules Kounde and Inaki Pena in receiving the same treatment.
Raphinha’s incident happened just last week with him dropped from the starting XI against Valencia. He came on at half-time, scored twice in the 6-0 win and started in Newcastle.
Rashford came off the bench at half-time at the Estadi Johan Cryuff with Barca 2-0 up thanks to Ferran Torres’ brace. He replaced Raphinha and responded to being dropped by proving an assist for Dani Olmo just 17 minutes later.
It’s not the first incident involving Rashford and discipline issues. In January 2024, he was dropped from the United squad by Erik ten Hag after going out in Belfast and missing training – following on from an incident of lateness before a match against Wolves in the 2022/23 season.
In Spain, the England international has scored two and assisted another two in his last three games. Barcelona are next in action on Thursday night when they travel to Real Oviedo before taking on Real Sociedad on Sunday.
Speaking about his experience in Spain so far, Rashford said after the win against Newcastle: “He’s [Hansi Flick] is a top man, top coach and he’ll be delighted with not just the three points but the way we won.
“Most goal kicks, they’re pressing so high, we still tried to play out from the back, it doesn’t work all the time but we looked a positive team and with the quality we have, we can always make things happen.”
