David Tennant revealed an eye-watering injury he suffered while filming one of the sex scenes in Rivals – which left him ’embarrassed and on the floor’ in nothing but a ‘modesty pouch’.

The 54-year-old appeared on Monday’s episode of This Morning to chat to Ben Shephard, 50, and Cat Deeley, 48, about his new drama The Hack.

But the conversation soon turned to the other programmes that he’s been working on, including filming for the second series of Rivals.

Ben pointed out that everyone was ‘at it a lot’ in the first and went on to ask: ‘Is it true you had an accident filming one of those scenes?’

David – who plays Tony, Lord Baddingham – said: ‘Yes I did. I was launching myself onto a wooden bed, but unfortunately my knee collided with the bed frame in a rather unfortunate way.

‘Not very sexy.’

Ben asked: ‘Have you now got a stunt double for those moments?’

‘You can never quite tell when you are going to fall over and embarrass yourself, can you?

‘But you certainly don’t want to do it when you’re wearing a modesty pouch,’ David said.

Rivals, which is based on Jilly Cooper’s novel of the same name, hit Disney+ in October 2024.

The show’s synopsis reads: ‘It is 1986 and Britain is booming. “Rivals” dives headfirst into the cutthroat world of TV where hair-dos are big and ambitions are even bigger.

‘Deals are brokered in boardrooms, as well as bedrooms. Nobody can be sure who will come out on top.

‘With every man and woman out only for themselves, can true love really blossom in this highly anticipated adaptation of Jilly Cooper’s bestselling Rutshire Chronicles novel?’

It stars the likes of Alex Hassell, Aidan Turner, Victoria Smurfit, Nafessa Williams, Bella Maclean, Katherine Parkinson, Oliver Chris, Danny Dyer, Lisa McGrillis, Emily Atack and Rufus Jones.

Back in May it was revealed that Rivals will return to our screens for a second series after it’s huge success last year.

The first series, which was eight episodes, became a huge hit and ended on a huge cliffhanger after David’s character Lord Tony Baddingham was left for dead.

Though the fate of Lord Baddingham appeared dire, it has now been confirmed that David will reprise his role in the upcoming second season in a major casting update.

The streaming service has also confirmed that they have already started filming again, with fans set to be treated to 12 new episodes.

Along with David’s return, Alex Hassell will reprise his role as Rupert Campbell-Black and Aidan Turner will once again star as Declan O’Hara.

Nafessa Williams will once again take on the role of Cameron Cook, while Bella Maclean will again play Taggie O’Hara and Emily Atack will return as Sarah Stratton.

Last month Aidan and Nafessa shared a first look at tense season two showdown.

Behind-the-scenes images show Nafessa looking ferocious in a textured yellow wrap dress, complete with a chunky buckle belt, as her character looks determinedly on.

Aidan is equally striking in a sharp blue suit and tie, sporting an impressively powerful moustache and tousled curls as he confronts his on-screen rival.

Fans can expect drama and plenty of confrontations as the characters’ personal and professional rivalries collide.

It follows the news that two Hollywood actors are set to join the cast of Rivals for the comedy’s upcoming second series.

Hayley Atwell and Rupert Everett will be starring as Helen Gordon, Rupert Campbell-Black’s ex-wife, and show-jumping coach Malise Gordon.

Filming for the next instalment began in May, with stars such as Danny Dyer and Emily Atack sharing a behind-the-scenes insight from Disney+ set.
