Liverpool made a winning start to their Carabao Cup campaign on Tuesday as Alexander Isak scored his first goal for the club. The much-rotated Reds were not quite at their best in the first half, and were somewhat confounded by Southampton’s rigid defence and lively press. For stretches in the first half, the Saints appeared the more likely scorers, but their good work was undermined as Federico Chiesa cut out a loose pass from goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, squaring for Isak to fire home and open his Liverpool account.
