It’s been a little over a week since NBN delivered its faster speed upgrades, which have introduced new NBN
500, NBN 750, and NBN 2000 plans to market.
For many existing customers on HFC and FTTP connections, this means their NBN 100 plans have become NBN 500 and NBN
250 customers now get NBN 750 plan speeds. The majority of providers have passed on the changes to existing customers for free and are now offering the new speed tiers to new customers.
Some providers like Dodo and iPrimus won’t be introducing the changes til October 1.
With more NBN plans in the market, it can be hard to work out which plans are best value for money.
Compared to an NBN 100 plan, with an NBN 500
plan, you can expect five times the download speed speed. NBN 500 plans start as low as $64 per month with SpinTel’s promotional pricing. After six months, the plan costs
$84.95 per month.
If you’re an HFC or FTTP connection customer who was on NBN 50, you won’t have been automatically upgraded, but you could benefit from ten times the speed on a cheaper plan.
If you’ve been with the same provider for more than six months, chances are you’re paying full price for your NBN 50
plan. Most NBN 50 plans cost around $80 per month ongoing once honeymoon discounts end. Meanwhile, NBN 500 plans start around $15 cheaper for the first six months. Once those initial discounts end, many providers’ plans are still around $85, meaning you could see a big increase in speeds for an initial saving.
Let’s look at an example: if you’re a Southern Phone NBN 50 plan customer with an ongoing offer, you’ll pay $79 per month. Over the next 12 months, that will be $948. If you were to sign up for SpinTel’s NBN 500 plan, you’ll pay just
$64 for the first six months and then $84.95 ongoing. Over the same 12-month period, you’ll end up paying $893.70 or rather saving $54.30 and getting significantly faster speeds.

It’s an interesting story for NBN 250 customers who were moved to NBN 750. If you are on Flip’s Super Speed plan with an ongoing offer, you’ll pay $89.90 per month. Over 12 months, that’s $1168.7. If you signed up for the same SpinTel
NBN 500 plan, you’ll pay $893.70 over the year and save $275. You’re paying less than you did before and still getting twice the speeds you were previously.

A handful of providers have started offering the new NBN 2000 plans, but these are going to be overdoing it for a lot of households with maximum speeds of up to 2000Mbps (actual typical evening speeds haven’t been confirmed by any provider yet).
Most households wouldn’t notice the difference for regular activities like browsing, online gaming and streaming. Even in terms of large downloads, the difference is fairly negligible in terms of the price difference. In ideal conditions, a typical game patch of about 20GB would take about a minute and a half on NBN 2000 or just under 6 minutes for NBN 500. You can wait five minutes more and save over 40% (without promotional pricing).
It’s worth noting that many devices such as your phone or laptop may not even be able to achieve 2Gbps speeds themselves, depending on what generation of WiFi they support and your in home network setup. Even wired devices – which can typically achieve your maximum internet speeds at all time – will be limited by the speed of their ethernet port. The Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X, for example, each only have a 1Gbps speed port.
You’re looking at paying $145 per month for the first six months, after which prices can get as high as $190 per month.
