John was a pupil at Taunton School from 1955 and in 1959 captained the First XI scoring over 1000 runs at an average of over 93 and taking 34 wickets at 22.88 runs apiece.

He joined Warwickshire in 1960 and between then and 1976 the hard-hitting right handed opener scored almost 19,000 First Class runs at an average of over 33, which also included 33 centuries.

In 1974 he shared a partnership of 465 runs with teammate Rohan Kanhai, against Gloucestershire at Edgbaston, which is the highest ever second wicket stand in county cricket.

Following his prolific first class career which also included four Test matches and three ODI matches for England, in 1977 he returned to Taunton School as cricket coach and head groundsman.

He stayed at Taunton until 1982 during which time he coached the likes of Ricky Bartlett and Nick Pringle who both went onto play for Somerset.

Whilst he was living locally John played cricket for Staplegrove and in 1978 helped them to win the Somerset League Division One title, scoring 608 runs at an average of 55 during the season.

He enjoyed playing cricket for Staplegrove and during the time that he was involved entered fully into the spirit of the club. Over the course of his five seasons John scored a total of 1980 runs at an average of 52.

Following his time at Taunton School between 1984 and 87 John served as a first class umpire as well as working as an ECB pitch inspector.

He coached Sussex for a short while and in 1989 was appointed MCC secretary. In the 2010 New Years Honours he was awarded the MBE for services to cricket.

While John was playing club cricket in Taunton he regularly opened the batting for the Somerset Cricket League side with David Pattemore who was reunited with his fellow opener when Warwickshire played at Taunton in 2024.

David said: “He was a really good player and I got to know him well when we opened together, and played against him many times. He was good company and thoroughly enjoyed playing local club cricket-  and he really whacked it!”

John Jameson died on 13 September 2025, at the age of 84.
