Hades 2 is officially releasing for PC and Nintendo Switch on September 25th, and that means the first reviews have just started to go live – and it’s currently racking up an incredible 94 average rating on Metacritic.
The score could change as more reviews roll in, but for now, Hades 2 is the highest-rated new game of 2025 according to Metacritic, putting it above the likes of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Split Fiction and Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Here’s what just a few of those Hades 2 reviews are saying so far:
IGN (10/10)
“Hades 2’s art is breathtaking, its characters are captivating, the combat is fast, fun, endlessly varied, and tactical, and the music is spectacular.”
“Supergiant’s visionary approach to storytelling and roguelike design has not suffered at all from the success of Hades: it merely emboldened it. That the studio can still dole out the surprises after how rich and textural Hades was, and that I still find myself floored by the ambition, the detail, the art, the technical prowess, and the willingness to cede control to players some 60-plus hours in is miraculous. Maybe it’s witchcraft. Maybe it’s magic. Either way, it’s epic.”
“Hades 2 sticks the landing with an evolution on an already mighty foundation, with enough changes to the core to justify its existence as a separate entity. For returning players, Hades 2 will give them more than they could want. For first-timers, it provides a polished and extremely enjoyable place to start.”
“It feels like Hades really kicked off the trend of the plethora of action roguelikes that have come after it, but I’ve yet to find one that surpasses this series. Hades 2 once again delivers on the first game’s promise by refining its systems, adding even more content, and telling another engaging story with brilliantly acted and interesting characters from Greek mythology. It’s a must-play game, especially on the Switch 2.”
“Despite my issues with its pacing early on, Hades 2 won me over. It expands on the original game’s imaginative take on Greek mythology, blending cerebral action RPG combat and slick narrative design into a complete package that feels distinct from the original. I’m glad I pushed through those early doubts, because it’s as good a game as I’ve come to expect from Supergiant, which hasn’t missed yet.”
“As a sequel, Hades 2 is ambitious, and delivers one of the most satisfying roguelite experiences in years. Yet, it can’t escape the shadow of its predecessor, and in trying to add every idea possible to amplify its scale, the story ends up losing the trademark weight of the studio.”
As we’ve mentioned before, Hades 2 doesn’t have a release date for Xbox just yet, but if it’s anything like the first game, we’re expecting to wait around a year until it finally makes its Xbox debut. That’s going to feel like a long old wait!
It’s going to be interesting to see how it fares in the Game of the Year awards in the meantime, as it’s suddenly become a frontrunner alongside some extremely excellent titles. Of course, as soon as we hear anything about Hades 2 getting an Xbox release date, we’ll be sure to let you know here at Pure Xbox!
Will you be picking up Hades 2 this week, or waiting until it comes to Xbox? Tell us in the comments.
