The 19-year-old has been out with the same issue since November last year, when a tackle in a 2-1 loss to Cardiff halted his rapid ascent into the Canaries’ first team.
He had knee surgery for the first time in March after exploratory treatments failed to resolve a problem with his meniscus, returning to the Colney training pitches this summer for light running work.
But he’s now had an operation on the same injury again, with action taken to reduce consistent swelling on the joint when optimism had begun to grow about a potential return to first-team action. It’s believed to be a relatively minor procedure, although it serves as a setback in his recovery.
Forsyth confirmed the surgery on his personal Instagram account, saying: “Operation successful, back soon!”
The blow comes as the latest in a series of frustrating fitness-related developments for head coach Liam Manning, who only on Wednesday revealed that summer signing Papa Amadou Diallo would be out for three to four months with a serious quad injury.
Ben Chrisene and Mathias Kvistgaarden are also both sidelined for a number of weeks with ailments of their own, while Amankwah Forson has a long-term hamstring injury.
Injury crises also blighted Johannes Hoff Thorup’s tenure as Norwich boss, forcing sporting director Ben Knapper into the free agent market to sign Emiliano Marcondes on a short-term deal.
Knapper insisted after Thorup was sacked that he and his staff would launch an inquest into those problems, while Manning asserted this week that taking internal responsibility for injuries was vital.
“You look at the game as a whole, there are a large number of injuries,” he said. “There’s a huge amount of work that goes into finding out why that is the case. It’s always difficult to pinpoint one factor.
“You’re going to pick up contact injuries. Mathias’ one was a freak landing. There are obviously other bits where we have to look into how to make sure the programme we run is better and understand why these injuries happen. There are bits going on behind the scenes where we have to be better.”
