David Tennant’s new ITV drama The Hack has fans “utterly gripped” after its bold and star-studded premiere this week.

The Hack tells the real-life story of the News International phone hacking scandal, which saw News of the World shut down amid investigations into claims of phone hacking, police bribery, and exercising improper influence in the pursuit of stories.

The thriller stars the Doctor Who icon as investigative journalist Nick Davies, while Toby Jones plays The Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger.

The series kicked off last night with the first episode, paying a cheeky homage to Nick’s secretive source, Apollo Man, whom he never revealed the identity of.

Several celebrity cameos were used to address the many theories behind who Apollo Man could have been, with Harry Hill, Konnie Huq, Gabby Logan, and Jonathan Ross all cropping up in the bizarre scene.

In an Instagram post which marked the show’s launch and teased the scene, many fans have shared how “hooked” they are on The Hack, just one episode in.

“It’s amazing, so gripping, each part. Excited for the next episode,” one user commented.

“Love this format omg can’t wait to watch it,” another person wrote, while others compared the show to “a Wes Anderson movie.”

Talking about the star-studded scene in the first episode, another viewer added: “This scene made me laugh. David, you did amazing on The Hack.”

Google reviews have been similarly glowing from viewers, with a viewer praising the series’ “great acting” and the “detailed reminder of true events, which may have been blurred by time”.

“Most of us will remember the big hacking story which led to the demise of the newspaper and awful people behind it. Now back to this drama, well written and extremely well acted with well-known actors. Very enjoyable watching. Would recommend,” wrote another user.

Another person added: “Stylish. Intriguing. Brilliant acting. Fascinating to watch a dramatisation of events you half know already, strung together and cased in a philosophical and moral gel.”

The Hack airs on ITV and STV.
