A former Top Gear presenter had a beloved car stolen in Bristol, which fans tracked down before the police.

Chris Harris took to social media to ask fans to help look for his stolen BMW M5 which was taken from Clifton.

Harris, who was educated at Clifton College, was staying in the city when the car, which he had for 19 years, was taken from where he had parked it.

In an attempt to find his stolen car, Harris posted the registration and a picture of the car pleading with his followers to help him find it.

“Owned 19 years and stolen last night. Pls keep an eye out for it,” he said.

However, his fans rushed to action to help return the car.

One fan and follower, Lee, messaged Harris to say he had seen the car a “long way” from where Harris lives.

Posting again to social media, Harris said a fan found the car and waited with it until he could be reunited.

He said: “M5 update. This is Lee. He messaged saying ‘I’m stood by your M5’.

“It was a long way from where I live. And they’ve made a bit of a mess of it, but it’s back.

“Lee stayed with the car until I arrived. What a good man.

“It’s clear these older cars are now a target and we need to be more careful where we leave them.

“I am a very lucky boy having my favourite car returned.”

The thieves did cause some damage to the car, mainly breaking the cover of the ignition to get the car started.

Harris, a British automotive journalist, professional racing driver and television presenter, hosted Top Gear from 2016 until 2022.
