Jayden Meghoma admits Rangers are letting the club down with their horror start to the season – and says the rot must end against Livingston.

The on-loan Brentford full back has urged his team mates to show their character – with more protests against Russell Martin expected in the away support on Sunday – and start delivering wins for the under-fire manager.

Martin’s side have already hit a 47-year low by failing to win any of their opening five league matches leaving them second bottom and leading to demos against the manager just four months into his reign.

Thursday’s Europa League defeat to Genk at Ibrox added to the gloom against a backdrop of empty seats in the stands and another toothless display on the park. It means Rangers have tasted victory just four times in their 14 games across all competitions so far.

Pressure is at breaking point on the beleaguered boss and chief executive Patrick Stewart ahead of the trip to face the Lions. Martin was adamant he still had the support of the club’s owners after meeting in the wake of the Genk defeat.

But Meghoma accepts the Ibrox side need to up their game fast – and prove they have the mental strength to play for the club by shutting out the noise.

He said: “Absolutely. We need to focus on the next game and making sure that we win for this club – because it’s a massive club.

“And we should be doing better for this club.

“It’s a mentality thing, you know. We’re working on it every single day and we’ve just got to focus on the next game and try and prepare as well as we can.

“Of course you have to support each other. As a team, we have to be together. It’s the only way to get through a tough time like this.

“Can a victory change things? Absolutely. We need to just win a game of football.”

Martin was defiant after Thursday’s night’s defeat to Genk which saw Rangers reduced to 10-men when Mohamed Diomande was red carded just before the break with the game goalless.

Furious supporters hit the boos again long before the final whistle while chants of Martin GTF rung out at full-time and not for the first time.

But the manager met with owner Andrew Cavenagh, chief executive Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell soon after and insists they remain on the same page as they look for a way to push the club forward.

Meghoma has only tasted victory once in seven outings since agreeing a loan switch from the Premier League club last month.

And that’s a stat that stings the Bees’ youngster who has also endured a brutal introduction to European football with bruising defeats to Genk and Club Brugge.

The 19-year-old knows Martin better than most having been handed his professional debut at Southampton by the Englishman two years ago.

And he said: “Everybody was disappointed and down on Thursday because we didn’t get the result we should have got at the end of the day.

“Everybody was a bit disappointed.

“I think at times it could have been better in that first half.

“We had chances to kind of really dominate them and we didn’t take that.

“I talked to him (Martin) at the end. There’s not much he can say.

“He said we played alright, but we did it to ourselves kind of thing.

“When you’re going down to 10 men, it’s quite hard to win a game like that.

“You want to win a game, but again, it is what it is and you’ve got to move on to the next game.”

The critics are adamant Martin’s system is broken. But according to Meghoma it’s down to the players to fix it – rather than the manager to tear it up and start again.

Martin’s insistence on a possession-based game and building from the back has won him little support among those who matter most – the fans.

Not only has it brought just four wins from 14 games but a lack of goalscoring opportunities within those matches as well while too often opponents have been presented with gifts due to Rangers over-playing in front of their own goal.

It’s brought a ton of pressure down on the boss from the stands which will again be ramped up ahead of kick-off at Livingston.

But left back Meghoma insists the best way to turn their fortunes round is by buying into Martin’s gameplan – and doing it better.

Asked if it was time to change the system for the player’s own good, the Brentford loanee said: “I’m not too sure.

“As players, when you’re under a system, you kind of really need to take to it and focus.

“You have to try and do your best to play in that way.

“It’s never easy either way (whether your winning or losing) but as a team we’re always focused and prepared for the next game.

“We’re always attempting to win the game and that’s what we have to do against Livingston.

“Every game has its different challenges and poses a different threat.

“We know we’re coming up against them and we’re ready for it.”

Livi’s artificial surface will be a new experience for the 19-year-old – on a professional basis anyway.

But he knows there will be no excuses should Rangers come up short again.

It’s been an unforgiving few weeks for the youngster since he made the move north.

But he insisted: “I’m enjoying it, but at the same time, you know, I’m always focused on the next game.

“As a team, as a whole, we do need to focus on what we can do together.

“On a professional level I’ve never played on an artificial surface, no.

“But it doesn’t faze us because we prepare for these types of things and we know what we’re going into.”
