Manchester United suffered defeat to Brentford and social media activity in the build-up to the game rubbed salt in the wounds.
Once again, the chance to win back-to-back Premier League matches slipped through Ruben Amorim’s fingers as he watched Manchester United lose 3-1 to Brentford.
It was the first time this season that summer signings Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko started together. While Sesko scored his first United goal, it wasn’t enough to stop United from suffering their fourth defeat in 2025/26.
Bruno Fernandes missed a vital penalty which would have brought United into the game, but it wouldn’t have patched over what was another worrying attacking performance from the Red Devils.
Fernandes was spotted fuming at Cunha during the match, and the Brazilian is yet to score or assist following his move from Wolves in the summer.

The Brentford match was a huge opportunity for United to build momentum following the victory over Chelsea, but again the defeat feels like another two steps backwards.
Before the match, United’s social media admin made a post on X about Cunha’s earphones. In hindsight, it didn’t go down well with the fanbase.
“Why are you talking about what players are wearing? We’re a laughing stock,” wrote one fan.

Man United have been labelled a commercial club
While the Cunha post seems insignificant in the larger picture, fans clearly feel it represents the drop in standards and footballing culture at the club.
In previous years, Louis van Gaal called United a ‘commercial’ club and sadly he has been proven right with the club’s actions in the past decade.

Cunha wasn’t outstanding against Brentford, and he is the unfortunate fall guy from a post he didn’t choose to upload, but it does paint a worrying picture about where the club is focused.
After the full-time whistle, Cunha urged United to improve, and despite his poor start he does seem to have the mentality to succeed with the Red Devils.
However, there is no denying that the club is currently miles away from the Sir Alex Ferguson years where United’s arrival at a stadium would drum up fear in opponents.
